| THE
PALIO OF ASTI |
One thousand two hundred people in medieval costume,
twenty-one horses, the whole town decked with flags,
propitiatory dinners the day before: these are the
ingredients that make of the Palio the most long-awaited
appointment of Asti’s September. The town
is excited not only by the tradition, but also by
the genuine passion of the villagers which feeds
a year-long festival.
Among the collateral events there’s the “Flag-wavers’
Palio” on the Thursday before the Palio. It
fills Piazza S.Secondo with music and colours: a
parade dedicated to the noble art of the flag put
on by the local groups of flag-wavers.
On Friday, and still in Piazza S.Secondo, you will
find the Palio’s street market: every committee
offers interesting and original souvenir rigorously
manufactured with the colours of every quarter,
district and village taking part in the Palio competition.
In order to fully understand the atmosphere of the
Palio, don’t miss the propitiatory dinners
in the streets and squares of Asti: on the eve of
the competition, songs, dances, good food and various
performances to while away the time waiting for
the victory of the following day.
