The
village has very ancient origins. In the
Roman period the via Fulvia passed through
Vinchio. In the year 935 Aleramo defeated
the Saracens here. The imposing castle,
built in the thirteenth century, was demolished
in the nineteenth century. Granted to
Asti in 1213, it was given to the Scarampi
family, who held onto it for the following
centuries, except in the period of the
Orléans viscounts. In 1635 the
castle was attacked by the bandit Stefano
Re. It went to the Savoys in 1736, after
which it followed the fortunes of that
dynasty.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| A
gentle landscape of hills and dells, alternating
between vineyards and woodland. The village
economy is mainly based on farming and the
most widespread cultivation is wine grapes.
There are some outstanding wines produced:
Barbera d’Asti, Dolcetto, Freisa, Grignolino,
Brachetto, Cortese, Chardonnay and Moscato.
Then there is the ‘Saracen’ variety
of asparagus: thanks to the characteristics
of the soil these are plump, with a wonderful
flavour and fragrance. |

Vinchio
was the birthplace of Davide Lajolo, writer
and politician. He was an officer in the army
and fought in Greece and Albania, but even
while in battle he continued to write poetry
rejecting the idea of war and death in battle,
commemorating the deaths of fellow soldiers.
Once back in Vinchio, he made the difficult
decision to organise the partisans of his
area, taking “Ulisse” as his code-name
while in battle.
In the village of Vinchio there is a photographic
museum dedicated to the author of "Il
vizio assurdo".
There is also a website dedicated to DAVIDE
LAJOLO, politician, journalist and writer:
