HISTORY

In the year 1001 the Emperor Ottone III of Saxony granted to the Benedictine nuns of San Felice in Pavia the Court of Corveglia (Curtis Vetula). In 1215 the Abbess Massimilla sold the Convent of Corveglia, Villanova, Supponito and Monastero to the Commune of Asti. In 1248 the Podestà of Asti, Turello Milone, began building the fortified Nova Villa and moved the local population into that area. In 1285, thanks to Oddone Blandino, Captain of the people of Asti, Villanova became a free Commune in its own right.

LOCAL AREA - ECONOMY
Over the last forty years the economy has greatly changed due to the arrival of various industrial activities. While agriculture has diminished in terms of the number of workers involved, there are currently 260 farms, 55 of which are cattle farms. The utilised agricultural area covers 2,878 hectares, respect to the size of the municipal area, 42.14 sq km.
ART AND ARCHITECTURE
The ‘Società Filarmonica Comunale’ (founded in 1885) organises music courses and shows during the main festivities. The Cultural Association “Gli Stretti” organises: drama workshops, a film workshop and an elocution course, as well as a winter theatre season, summer shows and short film shows. Unitrè (the University of the third age) offers courses on a range of areas and a drawing workshop.
EVENTS
The key events in Villanova d’Asti are held in July and September. The Pro Loco association organises the celebrations for the patron saint San Isidoro on the first Sunday in September, with an ox-drawn cart, auction, and recital of satirical dialect poetry. Throughout the year there are shows and cultural events, with the involvement of the various districts.
