Historically
known as “Villianum”, meaning
“rural place” or “village”,
in local dialect Vigliano d’Asti
is known as “Vian”, which
could indicate that it derives from “via”
or place of passage. This village is mentioned
in a document dated 899, in which the
Bishop of Asti entrusts a number of sites
in “Viliano” to his canons.
In 1715 Caterina Bogino left the estate
and castle to her children, and from then
on the history of Vigliano reflects that
of the rest of Piedmont.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| Vigliano
lies in the hills east of Asti. Its economy
is mainly based on wine growing. Apart from
Barbera, a time-honoured grape variety known
for the simple country wine it produces, and
which represents over half of the grapes grown
in Piedmont, Cortese, Grignolino and Dolcetto
are also made, along with liqueurs and some
very fine grappas. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
castle of Vigliano d’Asti, dating back
to the 10th century, lies in an outstanding
panoramic location in the highest part of
the village. This imposing square construction
features a nineteenth century neoclassical
main façade. The parish church is at
the highest point, beside the castle, and
is an extremely old building. It was restored
from 1952-1954 and in 1983 Luigi Azzuffi painted
a cycle of frescoes. |
| EVENTS |
| The
Patron Saint’s Day dedicated to “San
Secondo” is held at the beginning of
August. The specialities of Vigliano reflect
the traditional cuisine of the Monferrato
area, with the prestigious addition of the
white truffle in the autumn, which is still
gathered using the same techniques as those
of Pierino Riva, the octogenarian who supplied
truffles to the Royal Family. |
