HISTORY

There are not a great many Latin place names in the area, but enough to demonstrate the presence of the Romans. There is little left of the castle mentioned in a deed dated 1041, apart from a few lancet windows in the oldest houses in Viarigi. There is a document recording an oath of feudal subjection to Bishop Landolfo of Asti by Marquis Oberto. In 1396 the count of Savoy occupied the town. The Statute of the commune of Viarigi was drawn up in 1532, and this document lists the most ancient local traditions.

LOCAL AREA - ECONOMY
Viarigi is divided by the main road into Viarigi Alto and Viarigi Basso, the upper and lower parts of the town. One thing that strikes visitors is the skill of local masons in the use of brickwork. The fact that one district of the town is called “Fornace” (kiln) is indicative of the presence of manufacturing of bricks of all shapes and types, at affordable prices. From the church there are wonderful views of the surrounding landscape, with its farmhouses, woods, vineyards and ploughed fields.
ART AND ARCHITECTURE
Viarigi is famous for its Medieval tower, dating back to the 12th century, the only remaining trace of a well-equipped stronghold set amidst lush green countryside. The Romanesque church of San Marziano (in the district of the same name) dates back to the 11th century and lies among the fertile vineyards on the hill in front of the town. It features many animal forms sculpted in relief, with the heads of monkeys, horses and oxen, birds, as well as plant and floral decorations and beautiful rose windows.
EVENTS
The traditional event put on in Viarigi is known as “Saltinpiazza” – literally ‘Jumping in the square’ and it is a festival of street artists. In September Viarigi takes part in the “Festival delle Sagre” in Asti with a sumptuous menu featuring traditionally prepared agnolotti pasta served with roast meat sauce. It is a great opportunity to rediscover the values and traditions of the past.
