Part
of the ‘comitato’ of Asti,
and the property of the bishop of Turin,
it was held by the landlords of Viale,
and in the 13th century by the Calcagni
family of Turin. In 1296 it was granted
by the latter to the Grassella family
of Asti, who were succeeded by the Scarampi
then Balbiano families (1610). Until 1789
the Balbiano family were the only lords
of Viale, with the title of Count. When
the feudal era came to an end this family
remained in possession of the vast estate
and castle of Viale for several decades.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| Viale
is a country village north west of Asti, at
the heart of the Basso Monferrato area. The
surrounding land is mainly hilly, and two
thirds of it is covered in deciduous woods,
mainly acacia trees. Other areas, above all
on the boundaries with Montafia-Bagnasco,
still feature a prevalence of chestnut, British
oak and some Scots pine. The remaining land
is used for agriculture. |

| Edoardo
Perroncito (1847-1936) was a veterinary pathologist
and parasitologist. In 1873, aged only 27,
he became professor of General Veterinary
Pathology and Anatomy at the University of
Turin. His scientific renown, including some
international accolades, was mainly due to
his studies of parasitology, and he is best
known for discovering the cause of and cure
for “miners’ anaemia”. |
