The
Vesime area was inhabited by the Liguri
Stazielli people and then by the Romans,
who ascribed the entire area to the Camilla
tribe, based in Alba Pompeia. On the fall
of the empire the valley was invaded by
the Barbarians. The village then changed
hands several times, before becoming feudal
property of the Savoys, then in 1413 Giovanni
Scarampi. It went to the local viscounts
from 1431 to 1433. When it returned to
the dominion of Vittorio Amedeo II of
Savoy, the village experienced rapid changes
linked to the rise of the industrial era.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| A
land of vineyards and woodland, but also important
craft workshops, there are two sides to Vesime.
There is the modern version, with the houses
and terraced villas along the main road to
Cortemilia, and the historic, Medieval version,
a charming village which is full of surprises
for those who venture in to explore it. The
small firms present guarantee a good level
of employment and have consequently heralded
a moderate recovery in terms of demographics. |

| All
that is left of the castle, which was destroyed
by the Spanish, are a few imposing ruins and
a tower. The building which now hosts the
council offices is the only perfectly preserved
Medieval palazzo in the Langa Astigiana area.
The parish church of San Martino, a recent
Neogothic construction (1898), contains a
number of paintings by Rodolfo Morgari. The
much older Pieve di Santa Maria, in the cemetery,
was the first religious building in the village.

| EVENTS |
| Robiola
cheese, the main speciality of Vesime, features
in a trade fair with tasting sessions held
on the second Sunday in June. Another speciality
is the capon, which is bought and sold at
the Fiera di Santa Lucia (13 December): the
“Capon Fair” is the only one of
its kind in the Langa and Monferrato. In the
summer the main treat is “ravioli del
plin”, made by hand and served up during
the August holiday by the Pro Loco association. |
