This
was an ancient Roman colony known as Vallis
Finaria. The land belonged to Asti until
the marquis of Saluzzo managed to annex
it to his estates in 1306, holding onto
it except for a few brief periods, until
1601, when it became Savoy land. From
then on Valfenera was granted to various
different noble families, the last of
which was the Marquises Morozzo della
Rocca in 1773, a dynasty which died out
at the beginning of the 20th century on
the death of Marchesa Carolina.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| Valfenera
lies in the most westerly area of the province
of Asti and is considered one of the gateways
to the Basso Monferrato. It is above all a
farming town, but the importance of the local
silk industry should also be remembered: the
mill was in operation until 1954. Nowadays
only a small percentage of the population
still works in agriculture, as most are employed
in trades and industry in the surrounding
area. |

“New Geological Theory on the Creation
of Sedimentary Formation” in 1928, and
it is still being debated among scholars today.

| EVENTS |
| The
Torre Campanaria tower was built in the Middle
Ages and represents a thousand years of history.
It is the emblem of the village, reflecting
its glorious history, and a symbol of the
faith and work ethic of its inhabitants. Towards
the end of seventeenth century it was converted
into a bell tower. The Villata parish church,
dedicated to the Natività di Maria
Vergine, is one of Valfenera’s four
oldest churches. |
