Tonengo
can boast ancient origins: according to
some studies it could have been founded
by the Cimbri peoples. In 770 it was a
village of a certain importance in that
Carlo Magno granted it to Aimone Radicati,
count of Cocconato. Later, Tonengo became
the property of the Marquis of Monferrato
and in 1292 there are tales of a bloody
battle caused by the Asti population.
In the 16th and 17th centuries the village
belonged to the lords of Gattinara and
Settimo. In 1691 it became part of the
duchy of Savoy.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| This
is an area with exactly the right kind of
vegetation for producing the highly prized
truffle. As in much of the Asti area, it lies
on hilly land mainly given over to agriculture. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
The
parish church dedicated to the Madonna Immacolata
dates from the 18th century, with the façade
redesigned in a neoclassical style, softened
by two lateral pilasters. The wooden main
door is adorned with floral designs.
The small church of Saint Michael dates from
the roman era and is of special interest for
its sides and apse with frescoes and suspended
arches.

| EVENTS |
There
are two main events:
the ‘Polentone’ during carnival,
which takes place on Mardigras, with the distribution
of polenta and sausage, a tradition which
has run for more than 40 years;
The patron saint’s day dedicated to
San Michele, which takes place on the last
Sunday of September with an evening of dining
and dancing organised by the ‘Pro Loco’
Association. |
