HISTORY

Tigliole may have existed at the time of the Roman empire. It was a feudal estate which belonged first to the lords of Tigliole, who held it from 1331 to the second half of the 15th century. In 1560 Pope Pius IV named Emanuele Filiberto papal vicar for this area, which remained the property of the Holy See until 1741, year in which it passed to the Savoy State. This brought an end to the many privileges and tax advantages enjoyed by the people of Tigliole as subjects of the Holy See, but it also brought an end to the area’s popularity with those falling foul of the law.

LOCAL AREA
The village of Tigliole was once made up of two distinct centres, known as lower and higher. The former ceased to exist as early as the 14th century but there are still traces of it in the magnificent Romanesque church of San Lorenzo, dating from the period between the 11th and 12th centuries. The second centre corresponds to the present village. At the centre of the village was the castle, positioned on the hill where the council building now stands, and which inhabitants continue to refer to as the ‘castle’.
KEY FIGURES
Odoardo Cocchis, theologian and teacher at the University of Turin, was Prior of the Royal Academy for the nobility and in 1783 published a collection of poems which were mentioned by Denina with much honour.
Gio Secondo De Canis, historian of great renown in Asti and the surrounding area, held important public roles in various towns of the Asti area. Throughout the year 1798 he was in Tigliole with the role of vice-judge.
EVENTS
Since 1951 the patron saint’s day of San Lorenzo has been the occasion for a well-known Cattle Fair dedicated to the ‘razza piemontese’ breed, an important part of the local economy. The village features an entire museum dedicated to the craft of saddle-making throughout the ages, with detailed presentations of the various skills involved. The museum was established from a private collection belonging to the Fiorano Family.
