Little
or nothing is known of the history of
Serole, as it has almost always been included
in with the village of Spigno. The names
it appears under in 991, 1143 and 1170,
Ursariola or Orsairole, would appear to
suggest that it was a fortified place
around which bears prowled, not a rare
occurrence in the Acqui area, according
to all the Medieval records, stories and
tales of bear-hunting. In 1724 Serole
followed the fortunes of the rest of the
Monferrato Marquisate.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| Serole
represents the Langa area at its most pristine,
with woods, ravines, meadows, slopes and gullies
which fill with bloom in the spring, and the
sweet scents of Liguria. It is an ideal place
for fragrant herbs, which contribute to the
flavour of the goats’ milk used to make
the prized robiola cheese, which itself is
then sometimes flavoured with juniper ash,
Liguria olives or Moscato grape must. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| Unfortunately
the castle of Serole was completely destroyed
under the dominion of the Savoys. In the parish
church, built in the sixteenth century but
reworked several times since then, there is
a valuable 1655 wooden tabernacle and a fresco
on the ceiling depicting the Holy Trinity.
At the junction for Roccaverano is the country
chapel dedicated to San Sebastiano, which
probably dates back to the beginning of the
18th century. |
| EVENTS |
| The
main event in Serole is the Roast Chestnut
Fair on the third Sunday in October, a chance
to sample one of the simplest and tastiest
products from the woods of the Langa Astigiana,
accompanied by good wine and traditional music.
In the summer there are religious and folk
celebrations in honour of S. Lorenzo, Madonna
del Carmine and Madonna della Neve. |
