San
Paolo Solbrito was part of the comitato
di Asti and became property of the Bishopric
in 1041. Part of it was purchased by the
Commune of Asti, which then granted it
to the Marquis of Saluzzo in 1214. The
latter then reunited the estate in 1325.
The last owners of the feudal estate were
the Colli family, marquises of Felizzano.
The Colli family died out on 22 February
1943, with the death of the Marquis Vittorio,
who was buried in the family chapel in
front of the cemetery of Solbrito. The
history of San Paolo Solbrito followed
the fortunes of the county of Asti.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
The
two villages of San Paolo della Valle and
Solbrito were united by royal decree in 1928.
Situated at the edge of the Poirino plateau,
the land is varied, with both plains and gentle
hills.
There are still traces of the castle in Solbrito,
which is currently being restored, while there
is nothing left of the castle of San Paolo. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
houses of the local nobility include the well-preserved
Palazzo belonging to the Counts Gay of Montariolo,
set in recently-restored English-style gardens.
The Parrocchiale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo
is an attractive example of late Baroque architecture
boasting ornate frescoes in the interior,
which hosts a number of valuable seventeenth
century paintings. |
