In
the Middle Ages San Giorgio lay on feudal
land belonging to Asti, on the border
with the land of Genoa, which therefore
accorded it a certain degree of importance.
This increased when the castle and surrounding
complex was built between 1300 and 1382.
From the 15th century onwards the village
became known as San Giorgio. In 1518 the
name Scarampi appeared, the name of the
Asti family whose shrewd political manoeuvres
ousted the Del Carretto and Asinari families
from the feudal estates of the Alte Langhe.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| A
natural view point, a panoramic terrace which
looks out over the most genuine part of the
Langhe: Cortemilia and Todocco, Castino and
Perletto. This is San Giorgio Scarampi, a
tiny village where you will find a wide range
of local wines in the fourteenth century cellars
of the Bottega del vino, which offers the
finest labels produced in the Langa Astigiana. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
oldest church in the area is that of San Bartolomeo
(14th century). Meanwhile the church of San
Carlo is a little Baroque gem in sculpted
stone. The San Giorgio parish church features
a sandstone architrave on the portal (1645)
with an interesting bassorilievo sculpture
of St. George on horseback, dressed in Spanish-style
clothing. The Oratorio dei Disciplinati also
boasts interesting architectural characteristics. |
| EVENTS |
| From
Easter to October there are shows, concerts
and seminars held in the Scarampi Foundation,
which is based in the restored oratory, with
the aim of ensuring that Langhe culture is
not lost. What has been established is a meeting
place where the literary culture of the area
can be safeguarded and promoted. San Bartolomeo
is celebrated in the last week in August. |
