San
Damiano was founded in 1275 by the Commune
of Asti. And indeed after defeating the
Angioini in Roccavione, Asti destroyed
all the strongholds belonging to its enemies,
besieged Alba and razed all the castles
of Astixio to the ground. They obliged
their vanquished enemies to construct
a “villa nuova”, in the friendly
territory of Marcellengo. The latter settled
on the plains area where the market of
Marcellengo was held, by the church of
San Damiano. The village remained linked
to Asti and its changing fortunes.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| Set
in the Valle del Borbore, the village lies
on a picturesque plateau between the Langhe
and Monferrato areas. Amidst a vast amphitheatre
of vineyards, fields and fruit orchards, it
boasts wonderful harvests of prime quality
grapes. Aside from farming, the village is
an important trading and industrial hub, and
the historical centre is lined with arcades
and divided into ten different districts set
out in a geometric pattern. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
town hall, built in the 18th century, was
originally the residence of the Carlevaris
Counts. The first floor still features the
perfectly preserved gallery and halls, including
the council chamber, adorned with stucco-work
and richly decorated. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe
is one of the most beautiful 18th century
Piedmontese Baroque churches. The nave and
choir literally seem to blend into the main
altar. The ancient fortifications are now
tree-lined avenues which surround San Damiano. |
| EVENTS |
| The
“Caritun” is a religious festival
dedicated to unleavened bread held in Easter
week. On the second Sunday in June there is
the food and wine walk “Mangiando e
Scollinando”. The harvest is celebrated
in September and in the months of October
and November is “Autunno gastronomico”,
with events revolving around the main local
speciality: bollito. Then there are village
fairs in March, November and December. |
