The
first settlers in the Rocchetta Tanaro
area probably reached it by river, as
recent finds dating from the Neolithic
age would suggest. Roman presence has
been confirmed by digs carried out round
the chiesa delle Ciappellette. Events
in the Middle Ages are linked to the Arduino
dynasty, while at a later date the marquisate
of Incisa extended its jurisdiction to
Rocchetta.

| LOCAL
AREA |
| The
area’s geographical and historical alternation
of hills and rivers creates some wonderful
places to explore and offers nature-lovers
some stunning views. As of 1980 Rocchetta
Tanaro has been part of the region’s
protected areas, which is when the Parco Naturale
Regionale di Rocchetta Tanaro was established.
Traditional products include DOC wines and
food specialities such as ‘lingue di
suocera’ biscuits and conserves. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
Chiesetta della Madonna delle Ciappellette
is a little Romanesque church, also known
as Santa Maria de Flexio. The Chiesa Parrocchiale,
built in the eighteenth century on the site
of a Medieval chapel dedicated to S. Stefano,
has a lovely Romanesque bell tower dating
back to 1474, and features a marble holy water
font from 1476 and an eighteenth century Provençal
ivory crucifix. |
| EVENTS |
| August
in Rocchetta: a food and wine event featuring
local specialities and fish dishes, with musical
accompaniments. Rocchetta Tanaro hosts several
important singers and groups every year, then
there is the show put on by the “Frustatori”,
who crack their carters’ whips in time
to the music. |
