The
area around Rocchetta Palafea was inhabited
by Ligurian peoples in ancient times.
The name itself belies both the Celtic
origins and Roman domination of the village,
which is mentioned in a deed dated 1227.
The land belonged to Acqui and the Aleramico
Marquisate. In the 10th century it was
invaded by the Saracens. It then passed
to the Ponzone Marquisate and the Bishop
of Asti. In 1708, with the advent of the
Savoys, Rocchetta Palafea followed the
fortunes of Savoy Piedmont.

| LOCAL
AREA |
| Much
of the area is cultivated or under vines,
with mostly small vineyards which make for
some stunning views in the autumn. On the
hills there are patches of moorland covered
in broom, or woods of oak, ash, downy oak
and chestnut trees. Down in the valley, where
it is damper, trees which flourish in wetter
conditions thrive, such as British oak, willow
and alder. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
tower, which is believed to be Saracen, is
a classic example of a Langa fortification.
The Baroque parish church has a terracotta
façade and inside there is a remarkable
eighteenth century marble altar and two attractive
confessionals. It also contains several mid-eighteenth
century paintings. The Oratorio dei Disciplinati,
which completes the church square, is another
attractive Baroque building. |

| Rocchetta
Palafea was the birth place of Massimo Berruti,
a 1970’s legend in the most popular
local sport, ‘pallone elastico’.
Berruti’s prowess fired up the playing
fields of Piedmont and Liguria, in a series
of unforgettable matches with friend and rival
Bertola, and he won numerous national titles. |
