It
appears that in its earliest history the
village was called “Rupes”,
a generic name indicating its high position.
This was sometimes combined with the term
“castrum” to indicate the
military role of the place. Mentioned
in records dated 999, Rocca was one of
the main fortresses in the Asti area,
and played this role until 1644, when
it was demolished by the Spanish. The
Counts of Cacherano played an important
role in village history from 1250.
|
| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
The
village lies east of the Tanaro river and
can be reached from the main road which connects
Alessandria and Castello d’Annone, continuing
on the provincial road which crosses the bridge
over the river.
Wine plays an important role in the economy
of Rocca d’Arazzo, above all Barbera,
one of the most popular wines in Piedmont. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
chiesa di S. Stefano e S. Libera is a little
Romanesque gem. It probably dates back to
before the year 1000. Two fifteenth century
frescoes in the apse were recently restored,
one depicting Christ beside a deacon, the
other a veiled female saint. Palazzo Cacherano
is a large building constructed at the end
of the 17th century and beginning of the 18th
century by the Counts of Cacherano. It has
been the town hall since 1882. |
| EVENTS |
| There
is the “Sagra dell’Agnolotto”
held in August in the hamlet of Santa Caterina,
the “Festa dell’Amicizia”
in the hamlet of San Carlo and the “Patron
Saint’s Day” in the village. The
Pro Loco association of S. Caterina, in collaboration
with the Progetto Teatro association, has
also organised the First “Ettore Ottaviano”
Writing Competition, on the theme of “Village
stories”, an opportunity for those who
wish to tell a story of a “small country
town”. |
