The
book by De Canis has it that the name
Robella derives from “rober”,
meaning small oak tree. This land once
belonged to the lords of Cocconato, then
from 1187 to the Radicati estate, then
back to the lords of Cocconato. In 1367,
by order of the emperor Carlo IV, Robella
was granted to the Marquis of Monferrato
Giovanni II; it then changed hands several
times before passing to the Radicati of
Robella, with whom it remained until the
end of the feudal era.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| An
agricultural and industrial town of the Basso
Monferrato, at the northern edge of the province
of Asti, the land belonging to Robella forms
a wedge between the provinces of Turin and
Alessandria. It features a series of wooded
hills, partly cultivated as vineyards, where
the village and the hamlet of Cortiglione
lie, while the industrial and craft activities
are concentrated at the bottom of the valley
(in the hamlets of Cavallo Grigio and Cavallo
Bianco). |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| Robella
castle, which still stands, is a sixteenth
century construction, the rear of which was
altered in the 1700’s, and the façade
in the 1800’s. It features an iron “specula”
built in 1821 by the architect Mosca, unique
in the area. In the cemetery is the Baroque
Chiesa di San Francesco. Robella’s main
church is the Parocchiale di San Giacomo e
della Beata Vergine Assunta, built in the
18th century and subsequently altered several
times. |
| EVENTS |
| This
farming and industrial town in the Basso Monferrato
area, which also boasts food and wine and
tourist attractions, offers a series of events,
the most important of which are the Patron
Saint’s Day, held on the first Sunday
in August, and the “Robella Summer Carnival”,
a traditional social occasion with the chance
to taste the local specialities, organised
on the last Sunday in July. |
