The
name of the village comes from the epic
battle between two armies of Franks in
Gaminella, “rivus ex sanguine Francorum”,
and it was founded in the 10th century,
which is when the fortified castle dates
back to. In 1387 the feudal estate was
under French dominion. After changing
hands several times, Giovanni Tocco acquired
two thirds of the land of Refrancore.
Following the clashes between the house
of Savoy and the Milanese duchy, Refrancore
was occupied by the troops of the duke
of Savoy and under his dominion for a
few years, before returning to the Tocco
family.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
| Refrancore
lies 13 km east of Asti, at the foot and on
the sides of a hill, like a wedge of land
jutting out into the Gaminella valley. Its
land extends to the furthest reaches of the
Basso Monferrato and features numerous valleys
and hollows, with the soil abounding in silica-based
sands, as well as banks of sandstone. Its
key resources are agriculture and wine growing
in particular. |
| KEY
FIGURES |
Massimo
Quaglino was born in Refrancore and has sketched
and painted this village, and taken it everywhere
with him. In its centenary celebrations the
Turin Accademia Albertina commemorated him
with an important exhibition, run alongside
a show in Refrancore.
A painter with a special touch, and a great
talent for depicting and recording architecture,
above all the simple look of a small country
village. |
| EVENTS |
| In
the month of June Refrancore honours Massimo
Quaglino with a touring show which explores
the key locations in his life. There is also
no shortage of food and wine events: the local
cuisine offers many wonderful specialities,
served up with a wide range of fine wines.
In September, like many other villages in
the province, Refrancore takes part in the
“Festival delle Sagre” in Asti. |
