Originally
known as Plebata, the village then became
known as Piovata, shortened to Piovà.
It was dominated by the Radicati family,
which built an important castle here,
later inhabited by the Ricci counts. Of
particular interest is the monumental
eighteenth century parish church, a Piedmontese
Baroque treasure designed by Benedetto
Alfieri. The birth place of cardinal Massaia,
the village took on his name in addition
to its original one, in 1940.

| LOCAL
AREA |
| The
little village is divided into two separate
districts: Cornegliano, where the castle once
stood, and Bricco, where the peasants lived.
The hamlet of Piovà di Castelvero is
worth taking a stroll around, as it is an
attractive little spot, with a few houses
and many traces of history which can still
be seen in its monuments. |
| KEY
FIGURES |
| Guglielmo
Massaia (1809-1886), missionary and explorer,
lived in Ethiopia for thirty-five years, where
he not only dedicated himself to his humble
and ceaseless apostolic mission, but also
studied the local language and customs of
the people. He wrote a book entitled “My
Thirty Five Year Mission in Upper Ethiopia”,
which represents an outstanding guide to the
country. The Cardinal belonged to the Capuchin
Order. |
| EVENTS |
| There
are many attractions in the village. Piovà
Massaia has the Museo del Combattente, which
contains relics from the Second World War.
A visit to the parish church is a constant
source of discovery thanks to the masterpieces
it contains. Tourists can sample the area’s
food and wine in the local restaurants, then
there is the Patron Saint’s Day on the
last Sunday in May. |
