The
first traces of human settlements in the
area date back to the Neolithic period.
Then it was the turn of Celtic/Ligurian
peoples. There are more substantial remains
of the Roman colonisation, in the shape
of fragment of a document found in the
Malino farm. Pino d’Asti belongs
to the diocese of Vercelli, Chiesa Madre
of Piedmont. With regards to the first
lords of Pino, there are records of a
Jordanus de Pinu and his daughter Berta.

| LOCAL
AREA |
| Pino
d’Asti lies in the north west of the
province of Asti and is part of a wide area
known as the Basso Monferrato. It is in open
countryside, and though the landscape appears
to be completely dominated and patterned by
the tidy geometric rows of vines in the vineyards,
there are also genuine beauty spots of unspoilt
nature among these hills and valleys. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
eighteenth century façade of the castle,
which faces the village, conceals the rest
of the building, which dates back to the Middle
Ages. The Pieve was used as a parish church
until the 1820’s. In 1763 the architect
Bernardo Antonio Vittone designed a neoclassical
bell tower to sit alongside the Pieve. In
1810 it was given a neoclassical façade.
There are also other minor religious buildings
in the area. |
| PINUS
SYLVESTRIS |
| Worthy
of note is the widespread presence of Scots
Pine (Pinus sylvestris), in the area, with
some impressive-sized trees. This is the only
naturally-occurring conifer in the area, and
apart from its naturalistic interest (it is
a survivor of the ice age) it also gives the
village its name. |
