The
name of the village recalls a term in
vulgar Latin, “plagea” or
“plagia”, meaning sloping
surface or land. Or the name may derive
from Pleya or Playa, the first feudal
landlords of the village. The oldest Medieval
record which mentions Piea is dated 832.
Towards the end of the 14th century the
de Playa family died out and their part
of the estate of Piea passed to the Roero
family, a very powerful noble Piedmontese
dynasty.

| LOCAL
AREA |
| Piea
is not easy to make out from down in the valley,
intentionally so, to remain hidden from enemy
eyes. The lie of the land makes it ideal agricultural
terrain. In the valley there are beautiful
farmhouses with gardens containing rare, prized
species of plants which thrive due to the
favourable micro-climate which makes Piea
such a warm, welcoming and pleasant little
spot. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
Chiesa Parrocchiale dedicated to Santi Filippo
e Giacomo, patron saints of the village, dates
back to the late eighteenth century. The frescoes
adorning the barrel vaults inside, and the
walls of the apse, date back to the end of
the nineteenth century. From the piazza you
can also see the castle, which looks more
like an eighteenth century private mansion
than a twelfth century fortress. |
| EVENTS |
| Piea
takes part in the “Open Castles”
event, during which it is possible to visit
its ancient manor. Then there are other events,
like the carnival, traditionally held on the
Sunday after Shrove Tuesday, and in the autumn
there is an art exhibition and market: attractions
for those wishing to visit this little village
perched in the hills. |
