The
Commune of Penango was established on
8 November 1704 following the split from
Moncalvo of the districts of Penango,
Cioccaro and Patro, enfeoffed by Duke
Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga to the Marquis
Giovanni Gualberto di Campistron. In 1908
the commune lost the hamlets of Santa
Maria and Patro, which were reunited with
Moncalvo. Previously belonging to the
provinces of Casale and Alessandria, in
1935 it was included in the newly-formed
province of Asti.

| LOCAL
AREA |
Penango’s
main resource is wine: with prized labels
such as Barbera, Grignolino and Freisa.
Apart from agriculture, there are also a few
family firms and some craft companies. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
parish church of San Grato was rebuilt in
the mid 17th century, following a design by
the architect Francesco Ottavio Magnocavallo:
this religious building features Piedmontese
Baroque architecture and hosts works by Guglielmo
Caccia and members of his school, as well
as pieces of furniture by local craftsman
Giovanni Andrea Allemano. Magnocavallo also
worked on the reconstruction of the chiesa
di San Vittore in the hamlet of Cioccaro,
on a pre-existing Romanesque site. |
| EVENTS |
| Every
year the patron saint San Grato is duly celebrated,
while the hamlet of Cioccaro celebrates San
Vittore on the second Sunday in May. The active
Pro Loco association holds a summer festival
in the August holiday period, offering a taste
of local food and wine. The parish church
of San Grato also holds choral and musical
concerts from time to time. |
