HISTORY

The name Passerano Marmorito originates from the unification of the communes of Passerano, Marmorito and Primeglio – Schierano, in 1929. The coat of arms shows the main symbols which featured on the coins minted by the “Mint of Passerano” towards the end of the sixteenth century. From the date when written records were kept (1164), Passerano and the other feudal estates in the area appear to belong to the Marquis of Monferrato. In 1550 the castle of Passerano was occupied by the Spanish

LOCAL AREA
Passerano Marmorito is in the hills, overlooked by a hilltop where the complex of buildings which form the castle of Passerano lies. The area boasts many natural and environmental beauty spots, with visible outcrops of yellowish sand and marl, and rare, almost totally pure diatomites. There are also wonderful woods.
ART AND ARCHITECTURE
The Castle of Passerano is one of the most impressive in the entire Asti province, a veritable treasure chest conserving precious original artefacts dating from different eras. The imposing construction comprises a group of buildings built between the fourteenth century and the end of the seventeenth century. There is a striking church at the side of the castle which is very old but has been altered many times over the years.
EVENTS
Local events include a “gastronomic/nature walk” through the hills in June, and on 23 and 24 of that month the Patron Saints’ Days of Santi Pietro e Paolo, with dances and bowling competitions. In August there is the Patron Saint’s Day of San Lorenzo in the hamlet of Primeglio, while in September there is the Patron Saint’s Day of San Grato in the hamlet of Schierano.
