HISTORY

The first records of this village date back to 22 December 1142, when Olmo was granted to the Marquisate of Cortemilia. In 1209 Ottone del Carretto sold Olmo to the Commune of Asti. In 1613, in the war for the succession of Monferrato, it was besieged by the Spanish. After changing hands several times, the estate was sold to the nobleman Pier Francesco Borea, who assumed the title of Marquis of Olmo. Until 1776 it enjoyed a variety of privileges and was exempt from taxes and tolls.

LOCAL AREA-ECONOMY
Olmo is a visual symbol of the link between Langa and Liguria, the hills and the sea: standing on the crest of a hill that looks like a cliff top, in a land of tuff rich in seashells and marine fossils, and blustered by a breeze that feels like the sirocco wind, locally known as the “marein”. Its woods are full of mushrooms and truffles. The main agricultural activity is livestock, mostly sheep and goat rearing, for the milk used to make its much sought after robiola cheese.
SILVER MEDAL FOR MILITARY VALOUR
Olmo still has its castle, which is currently being restored. The rectangular sandstone tower probably dates back to the twelfth century. The San Martino parish church has a number of late-Renaissance features dating back to its foundation. Beside this is the chiesa dei Disciplinati. Other interesting sights are the little private chapel dedicated to San Sebastiano, the chiesa del Sacro Cuore and the ancient Pieve di San Martino.
EVENTS
There is a clay-pigeon shooting centre in Olmo Gentile which attracts dozens of sports enthusiasts in the warm weather. It is open every Sunday and on holiday afternoons from April to September. From June to September it is also open on Thursday evenings. There are monthly shooting competitions approved by the provincial F.I.T.A.V. committee.
