The
original name Muratianum Astensium, given
to the village by the Latins, was later
changed to Moransengum, after the settlement,
around 700 AD, of a group of Longobards.
Nothing is known of the first centuries
of the Middle Ages; it is however certain
that it was feudal land of the Bishop
of Vercelli. In 1164 Federico Barbarossa
confirmed the domination of Marquis Guglielmo
il Vecchio of Monferrato. Until the start
of the 18th century the history of the
area was linked to that of the nobility
of Montiglio.

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
| The
village economy has not undergone any significant
changes and is almost exclusively based on
agriculture. There are a few cattle farms
specialised in Piedmontese cattle and two
rabbit farms. One farm is dedicated to the
interesting activity of cultivating and supplying
medicinal plants to a cooperative. Logging
and the wood industry, for both prize woods
and fuel, and wine production are also relevant
to the local economy. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
ancient castle lies on one of the hills; as
early as 1461 an historical document attests
the passage of ownership to the Marquis Giovanni
of Monferrato. The castle is presently composed
of two bodies forming an L-shape. The hall
has cross vaults and with a terracotta floor.
On the summit of the castle hill is the Chiesa
di San Grato, the most important characteristics
of which are the recently discovered frescoes.

| EVENTS |
| The
Patron Saints’ Day of Saint Agata and
Saint Vitale is held on the first Sunday in
May, and home made sweets and drinks are distributed
by the inhabitants. The third Saturday in
June sees a great barbecue in the square organised
by the Pro Loco Association and on the August
holiday there is a non-stop spaghetti party
which goes on till midnight. The Summer Party,
which lasts from Friday to Monday following
the August holiday, has food stalls and dancing. |
