An
eighteenth century document apparently
transcribes a manuscript in which Carlo
Magno sanctioned the donation of land
to three brothers called Montiglio. The
name of the village could derive from
Monticules or more precisely Munticola,
or Montis Incola, or even from Montellus,
little mount, as the Romans would have
called it. The most picturesque theory
accords the origins of Montiglio to the
expression Mons tilii, in other words
“Monte del tiglio” (Mount
of the Lime Tree).

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
| Montiglio
Monferrato only came into being in 1998, the
first time in Italy that a referendum of the
respective inhabitants occasioned the union
of a number of villages: Colcavagno, Montiglio
and Scandeluzza. Colcavagno is closely gathered
and partly hidden by trees, Montiglio is strategically
built on the hill that dominates the Valley
Versa, while an antique brick archway between
two buildings indicates the entrance to the
historical centre of Scandeluzza. |
| THE
VILLAGE OF THE SUNDIALS |
| Montiglio
Monferrato is known as the village of the
sundials as it boasts around fifty, which
have been restored or created by local craftsman
Mario Tebenghi. There is a striking example
of a compass rose on the road from Montiglio
to Cunico. The phrases that adorn the sundials
are mainly in Latin, occasionally in dialect,
and regard the passing of time in relation
to the life of man. |
| EVENTS |
| The
castle of Montiglio continues to dominate
the village and surrounding area, and can
be seen from a great distance. The castle
takes part in the regional circuit of “Open
Castles” and can be visited with a specialised
guide throughout the year on booking or during
the following events: ‘Castles in Music’
in the period of the summer solstice (June)
and the Truffle Fair (October). |
