“...Born
on an irregular site and twisted from
the head of a monk...” The entrance
to the castle bears this phrase. If Montemagno
is observed from above the irregular forms
of the hills upon which the imposing structure
of the castle is built can be seen. Towards
the year one thousand, when the land was
still covered in woodland, was when the
village of Montemagno first came into
being. The oldest nucleus of the village
had its origins on a large hill (Montemagno)
surrounding a fortified area, part of
the feudal territory of the Marquis of
Monferrato.

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
| The
medieval town plan, unique in the lower Monferrato
area, is still visible today. Agriculture
and above all viticulture, is the basis of
the economy. Renowned for the production of
many D.O.C. wines: with reds such as Barbera
d’Asti and Monferrato, Grignolino d’Asti
and Ruchè; and whites like Chardonnay.
There are many vineyards within the village
boundaries, producing some excellent quality
wines. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
village is watched over by the imposing castle
built in the tenth century on the hill above
the valleys of the Gaminella stream and the
Grana river. In the historical centre the
Baroque parish church (18th century), the
entrance of which is from a monumental staircase
and three panoramic terraces, is of interest.
The church contains some beautiful pieces
of furniture and a precious canvas by Pier
Francesco Guala. |
| EVENTS |
| “Festa
del pane” (the last weekend in May):
a gastronomic fair dedicated to bread; during
the event the ‘Ostu dal pan’,
or local bakery, is open, offering a taste
of D.O.C. wines. “Montemagno under the
stars” (end of August – start
of September): a series of open air shows
with tastings of local products and wine.
Christmas concert in the parish church of
Saints Martino and Stefano of Montemagno (the
week before Christmas). |
