The
origins of Montegrosso can be found around
1134, when an attack of the plague decimated
the populations of numerous villages of
the Tiglione valley, and the survivors
moved to the high hill that hosts the
village today in search of more salubrious
surroundings. The Marquis Bonifacio del
Vasto, Asti aristocrat, built a castle,
imposing for both its size and the presence
of two high towers which constituted an
impenetrable defence. After various different
ownerships, in 1746 it became the property
of the Savoys.

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
| The
municipal area comprehends both sides of the
valley through which the main road from Asti
to the coast runs, alongside the river Tiglione.
This is a sunny valley with well-aspected
hills, as the local wine shows: a Barbera
which matures well and Cortese and Grignolino
with intense bouquets. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
The
panoramic castle, dating back to the 12th
and 13th centuries (today private property),
which has been restored several times through
the centuries, features two typically Medieval
cylindrical towers and an elegant Renaissance
doorway. The parish church of S.S. Secondo
and Matteo is also of interest, due to its
imposing dome and beautiful Neoclassical pronaos.
Chiesa dei Battuti (17th century) –
Chiesa di San Rocco – New church N.S.
di Lourdes, with the Via Crucis by Prof. Filippo
Avalle inside.
Parish church of S. Stefano. |
| EVENTS
ORGANISED BY THE PROLOCO ASSOCIATION |
| The
festival of the ‘Confraternita dei Battuti’
(second Sunday in June), is one of the most
original events of the Asti area re-enacting
the traditions of the old Medieval flagellators.
During August the Patron Saint’s day
is celebrated, culminating in the “Agricultural
machinery and goods fair”, established
by King Carlo Alberto in 1833, on the first
Tuesday after the August holiday. |
