Montechiaro
was founded on the 19 of March 1200, on
a Sunday; ninety-seven men from the hamlets
of Piesenzana, Mairano and Maresco swore
loyalty to the Podestà of Asti
“Nicolò del Fodero”
and obtained citizenship of Asti and the
permission to found the new village. The
village became the property of the Orléans,
who maintained jurisdiction on Montechiaro
until, following the victory of San Quintino,
it became part of the Savoy Duchy upon
the wishes of Emanuele Filiberto.

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
| The
local area, featuring the classic hilly landscape
of the Monferrato, has a mixed economy, based
on crafts, industry, agriculture and services.
However agriculture takes precedence, dominated
by cattle farming and viticulture. The picturesque
countryside has favoured the development of
tourism: the wonderful food and wine in its
restaurants, which offer high quality local
products. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| Among
the numerous testimonies of the past the square
Medieval civic tower dating from the 13th
century, known as “il portone”.
The small antique church dedicated to Saints
Nazario and Celso, from the 11th century,
is one of the most representative expressions
of Romanesque art in Piedmont. Montechiaro
boasts the presence of many other churches
which range from Romanesque to Baroque (Saint
Maria Assunta, Saint Bartolomeo and Saint
Caterina). |
| EVENTS |
| Based
on time-honoured traditions, Montechiaro organises
many events: on Shrove Tuesday polenta in
the square; on the second Sunday in June “Art,
secondhand market, flowers”; in August
the “summer theatre” festival;
on the first Sunday in September the Patron
Saint’s Day with a cattle and goods
fair, and in November the Regional
Truffle Fair. Montechiaro also
participates in the ‘Festival delle
Sagre’ and the Palio of Asti. |
