The
village take its name from its particular
geographical position (Mons Altus), which
indicates the location of the castle and
surrounding land. Following many changes
of ownership, in 1339 the castle became
the property of the Scarampi, an Asti
banking family which bought the castle
from the Marquis of Incisa della Rocchetta.
During the war with the Spanish in 1636,
the castle was pillaged, set alight and
badly damaged. In the early years of the
19th century the main body of the castle
was destroyed in a fire.

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
| The
village is set on the hill that dominates
the Tiglione Valley. The economy is based
on viticulture, with the production of Piedmont
and Monferrato DOC wines (Barbera d’Asti,
Barbera del Monferrato, Grignolino d’Asti
and Freisa d’Asti). It is possible to
taste and buy the prestigious wines of Montaldo
from the many private producers and the Cantina
Sociale. Local traditionally-made salami and
excellent woodland honey can also be bought.

| ITALIAN
FARMERS’ PARTY |
| The
parish church of Annunziata, rebuilt in 1640,
enlarged and restored in 1884, was one of
the main centres for the launch and development
of the ‘farmers’ movement’
led by Giacomo Scotti, which brought about
the foundation of the Italian Farmers Party
in 1921. In the hamlet of Forni, local farmers
built the first and only ‘house of farmers’’
in Italy. This building is now the Centre
for Farming Culture. |
| EVENTS |
| The
patron saint’s festival is held at the
end of July with evenings of dancing, theatrical
productions, photography and art exhibitions.
The second Sunday in September sees Montaldo
participating in the “Festival of the
Sagre” in Asti. The Pro Loco association
organises numerous other folklore and gastronomic
events throughout the year. There are also
sporting events linked to the game of ‘tamburello’.
