Probably
of Roman origin, as a number of gravestones
reveal (including one commissioned by
the proconsul Petronio Epagato, which
is now kept in the San Pietro museum in
Asti), Mongardino is mentioned in an Ottonian
diploma dated 975. In the 11th century
it was part of the Comitato of Asti. It
was in the feudal possession of the Gardini
family, sole landlords up to 1618, when
it passed to Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy.
The shrine of Madonna delle Grazie, in
La Madonna, was built in 1698.

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
| The
Mongardino area is highly picturesque, with
hills, stone cottages and farmhouses. It is
one of the most highly prized, prolific Barbera
areas. A wine of great class, Barbera is rich
in colour with marked acidity and light tannins.
Nowadays it is often aged in barriques, small
wooden barrels which lend it a rounded, harmonious
flavour. |
| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
| The
parish church, which has ancient origins and
a chequered history, was rebuilt in the mid
18th century, and there are also numerous
rural chapels of considerable architectural
interest along the roads and in the hamlets
of Mongardino. Then there are the 18 chapels
of the Way of the Cross, set out in a circle
on the hill of S. Antonio, dating back to
1739. An extensive restoration project is
currently being planned. |
| GASTRONOMIC
PRODUCTS |
| The
excellent wine produced, from a high quality
Barbera d’Asti to a refined Grignolino,
is the perfect accompaniment to sumptuous
dishes such as “tajarin destià”
(hand-made tagliatelle), risotto al Barbera
and agnolotti. At the ‘Festival delle
Sagre’ every year Mongardino presents
its increasingly popular “mon”,
a traditional Piedmontese sweet. Local wines
may be sampled all year round in the “Bottega
del Vino”. |
