Of
Roman origin, over the centuries Moncalvo
belonged to the Church of Asti, the Graffagni
family, the Marquis of Monferrato, who
made it capital of the Marquisate, the
Marquis of Saluzzo (1306) and then the
Paleologi family of Monferrato (1309).
It suffered various foreign occupations
and then fell to the Gonzaga family of
Mantova, who enfeoffed it to various local
landlords. Lastly it went to the Savoys
in 1704, and in 1774 Vittorio Amedeo III
declared it a city.

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
| Moncalvo
is another mainly agricultural town. The excellent
local wines are still renowned throughout
the world, with Barbera, Grignolino and Freisa.
Its genuine natural produce, grown and sold
directly to the consumer, occasions a continuous
flow of discerning visitors. From October
onwards the Monferrato area offers up one
of its most fragrant, delicious treasures,
the white truffle. |
| KEY
FIGURES |
The
churches of Moncalvo host various religious
paintings by Guglielmo Caccia, known as “il
Moncalvo” (1568-1625), and his daughter
Orsola Maddalena, both exponents of Piedmontese
counter-reformist Mannerism.
Their works are widespread not only in the
Monferrato area but also outside of Piedmont.
Another illustrious inhabitant of Moncalvo
was Gabriele Capello, refined cabinet-maker
of the Savoy-Albertine era. |
| EVENTS |
| There
are important events throughout the year:
from the Patron Saint’s Day in May to
the Monferrato Food Fair in June, from the
Horse Show of the Communes to the Pro Loco
Fair (in Asti) and participation in the Asti
Palio in September. This takes us up to October
and the Truffle Fair, then the historic 'Bue
Grasso’ cattle fair in December. |
