With
origins which go far back in time, the
first records date back to the period
of Aleramo, with the will of Sebastiano
del Vasto in 1125. As for its name, Mombercelli
may be derived from the Latin Mons Bersarium
or Mons Bergerium, or equally from the
Longobard Mombirsàn (place of the
hunt) or the archaic Piedmontese word
birkà (birch). The village saw
a succession of estate owners through
the centuries, as it changed hands between
the most important landed families of
the Asti area.

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
| Covering
an area of 1420 hectares, most of which is
under vines, Mombercelli has 19 hamlets connected
with an excellent network of roads, which
are the secret of its wealth and the source
of its time-honoured traditions. It is easily
reached from Asti (20 km), Alessandria (35
km) and Nizza Monferrato, Canelli and Alba.
A great day out on a splendid cultural and
wine and food route. |
| MUSEUMS |
| The
Museum/art gallery set up in 1972 boasts a
fascinating collection of works of modern
art which is constantly being added to, with
over 160 pieces. A few names: Vedova, Menzio,
C. Levi, Maccari, Paulucci, S.Benetton, Martinazzi,
Eugenio Guglielminetti and the sculptor Spinoglio.
The Museum of Vines and Wine is a sophisticated
journey through time, from the fossil era
to the present, with displays, artefacts and
curiosities all pertaining to wine and wine
production. |
| EVENTS
|
| The
Patron Saint’s Day is celebrated in
August, with a great number of events, while
in October, on the third Sunday, there is
the Truffle Fair. The area is rich in the
