HISTORY

The origins of the village are unknown, but the numerous Ligurian, Celtic and Roman place names in the area testify to its antiquity, as well as the presence of a parish church dating from the end of the Roman empire. There are definite records of the presence of a Commune here in deeds attesting to a donation from the Bonfacio Marquis of Monferrato in 1202. According to the historian Aldo di Ricaldone, Mombaruzzo derives from “mons Barutii”, namely ‘the hill of Barus’, a Roman who owned an estate with villa and farmland.

LOCAL AREA-ECONOMY
The inhabitants of the area are, and have always been, mainly occupied with wine production. The Cantina Sociale was established in 1903, with members in adjacent communes, while in recent years a number of private wineries producing and selling numerous prized DOC wines have also been set up. The traditional production of the Mombaruzzo speciality, amaretti biscuits, also goes back a long way.
ONE PRODUCT: AMARETTI BISCUITS
Francesco Moriondo, pastry chef in the Savoy court, moved to Mombaruzzo at the end of the 18th century and began making and selling his “Amaretti di Mombaruzzo”. Before long his business really took off, thanks to the wonderful flavour of the biscuits, which really are one of their kind. Production is now continued both by his descendents and by other local pastry chefs, who follow the original traditions to the letter.
EVENTS
On the last weekend in June there is the Patron Saint’s Day of Borgo Cervino, with the original amaretti-throwing contest. 22 July is the Patron Saint’s Day of Mombaruzzo itself while in the last week of July there is a festival in Casalotto, with an unusual rally of vintage ‘hot head’ tractors. In the last week in August is there is a six-day food event in Bazzana – the highlight for promoting tourism in the village.
