HISTORY

The first official records of the village date back to the year 991, when the Aleramici dynasty donated lands to the monastery of San Quintino di Signo, including the eight hides of land of Mombaldone. In 1209 Ottone del Carretto was granted the estate, and it remained the property of the Marquises Carretto di Savona for the rest of the Middle Ages. It was then granted to the Commune of Asti as the property of the Asinari family and then the Scarampis. Its largest period of growth was in the 14th century.

LOCAL AREA-ECONOMY
After a period of relative inactivity goat farming has now been successfully resumed, above all thanks to the good money to be made producing robiola DOP cheese, and the initiatives organised by the Comunità Montana. Renowned restaurants are also starting to appreciate the delicate flavour of the meat from the Langa Astigiana goats, which are farmed on a large scale and mostly butchered for Easter.
ART AND ARCHITECTURE
What remains of the ancient fortifications is the entrance to the castle, a pointed archway which conserves its original form, and despite its current appearance as an ornate eighteenth century palazzo, there are still traces of the original walls. At the end of the main street is a little square, with the parish church of San Nicolao, designed by Giovanni Matteo Zucchi (1790) alongside the oratory of the confraternita di San Sebastiano, also in Baroque style.
EVENTS
Mombaldone relives its Medieval heydays on the last weekend in August, when the village is literally invaded by figures in costume, with sword fighting, a Medieval market, dances in costume, music from the period and conferences on the same theme. The ‘Fritter Fair’ (on the last Sunday in May) is more of a gastronomic affair, while the main religious event is on 7-8 September.
