| HISTORY |
The
name Isola d’Asti derives from “lnsula
Astensis”, originally denoting an
island-like area surrounded by the Tanaro
river. After repeated flooding brought
outbreaks of disease, the inhabitants
moved higher up towards the hills, settling
on the current site. The first people
to live in Isola were Ligurian, followed
by the Romans. In view of its position
the commune soon represented an obligatory
passage on the way from the south of Asti
to the sea.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
Isola
d’Asti is still an important traffic
hub for the provinces of Asti, Alessandria
and Cuneo.
Its economy is mainly based on agriculture,
though in the last few years trade and
craft activities have begun to take hold.
It has strong wine-making and food traditions,
thanks to the Barbera DOC wine produced
in the hill areas. There are also important
cultivations of vegetables and flowers,
mainly in greenhouses, in the Tanaro valley.

Historic
sights include the 1600 bell tower, a
Baroque church dating back to the 1700s
and a little church dedicated to the Annunciazione
di Maria built in 1680. There is nothing
left of the old castle belonging to the
Natta family, and on the site of the castle
there is now an attractive church dedicated
to S. Pietro and decorated with noteworthy
frescoes by the renowned painter Morgari;
Pope John Paul II visited this church
on 21 September 1993 accompanied by Carlo
Sodano, who was born in Isola d’Asti.
