| HISTORY |
The
origins of the town probably go back to
the Roman period. It was the site of an
ancient church and the first Medieval
record dates back to 984. In the feudal
era it became the capital of a marquisate
which included the castles of Incisa,
Vaglio, Castelnuovo, Bergamasco and Carentino,
and retained its autonomy until the year
1514, when it was taken by Guglielmo IX
of Monferrato. Incisa takes the second
part of its name from the carabiniere
G.B. Scapaccino, the first holder of a
gold medal in the Italian army.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
The
area around Incisa is part of southern
Monferrato, in the lower valley of the
river Belbo. Its geomorphological characteristics
reflect those of the Monferrato area:
an alternation of plains, valleys and
low-lying hills. The landscape bears the
signs of the agricultural activities carried
out, mainly arable crops, fields, vineyards,
woods and vegetable cultivation.

All
that is left of the Medieval castle are
a few ruins and part of the boundary walls.
The church of Nostra Signora dei Carmine
in Borgo Villa, built in the 15th century,
represents a noteworthy example of religious
architecture, and hosts a valuable seventeenth
century organ. The two parish churches
are other interesting examples of religious
architecture: San Giovanni Battista in
Borgo Villa and SS. Vittore e Corona in
Borgo Madonna.
|
| EVENTS |
| The
Carnival is held in February, then in April
there is a spring concert, a musical contest
between young singers. In July Borgo Villa
organises the ‘Festa della Madonna del
Carmine’, then the August holiday is
celebrated in Borgo Madonna. In September
there is the ‘Festa di Virgo Potens’
in Borgo Impero. The second Sunday in October
is dedicated to the ‘Sagra del Barbera
e cardo storto’, while the fourth Sunday
is ‘Truffle Day’. |
