DUSINO SAN
MICHELE |
| |
| |
|
|
| HISTORY |
Dusino
San Michele comprises two separate villages
with very different histories. The land
has ancient origins and the name Dusino
comes from the Latin “Duodecimun”
(namely ‘twelfth mile’). The
history of the area was marked by a dramatic
event around the 13th century: the Commune
of Asti bought a marshy area with the
aim of draining it, fortifying it and
constructing a new town there, and the
inhabitants of the nearby communes were
sent to live in the new settlement. The
only thing that survived the destruction
of the old village of Dusino was the castle.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
This
area lies on the farthest reaches of the
Monferrato hills. In 1928 the government
merged the towns of San Michele and Dusino
and based the municipal council in Dusino.
The economy of Dusino San Michele, traditionally
based on farming, has undergone a recent
conversion to industry.

The
Chiesa di San Rocco was restored internally
in 1898, and apart from the noteworthy
frescoes visitors can admire the main
altar and the marble balustrade designed
by Juvarra.
The parish church dedicated to San Michele
Arcangelo, neoclassical in style, dates
back to the 12th century. The castle of
San Michele was built around 1214, while
the castle of Dusino was built on an existing
site in 1300.
