| HISTORY |
“Corticelle”
is an ancient Roman site, as testified
by historic documents, including a fragment
of a note dedicated to the Emperor Hadrian.
The Radicati family were granted feudal
rights to the land by Frederick Redbeard
in 1186, then it passed to the counts
of Cocconato. The Bishop of Vercelli enfeoffed
the estate to a number of different families,
the last of which were the Cortet family
of Grosso.

| LOCAL
AREA |
The
economy of the village has always reflected
its traditional activities: farming and
industry, and in the area there are numerous
small and medium sized firms, employing
180 people.
In recent years, with the relaunch of
Barbera, several wineries have gained
renown for their high quality products.

The
public square beside the town hall, which
dates back to the end of the 1800’s,
is dominated by the Chiesa di S. Siro
(the Patron Saint), which is also dedicated
to the Madonna del Rosario. Another ancient
religious building is the little shrine
dedicated to the Virgin of Fatima.
There are still some Medieval ruins of
the old castle.

| EVENTS |
| The
most important event is the “Festa della
Trebbiatura” – a harvest festival
which is held annually on the last weekend
in July. The culture and traditions of the
past are relived in this two day event, with
displays of the traditional produce of the
summer and demonstrations of how wheat was
harvested, with machinery from the 40’s
and 50’s, as well as an art show, and
in the last two years there has been a poetry
competition in memory of the journalist from
Cortiglione Ilario Fiore. |
