| HISTORY |
The
origins of Cocconato go a long way back.
The Latin origins of the name derive from
“cum conatu”, indicating the
effort which went into reaching the top
of the steep hill that the village lies
on, but according to ancient folk traditions
the name comes from “cocco è
nato”, meaning “the most beautiful
child has been born”. The Roman
history of the village of Marcellina is
clearly visible, though the history of
Cocconato is more closely bound up with
the fortunes of its noble lords, the Counts
of Radicati. Cocconato has been part of
the Province of Asti since it was created
in 1935.

| LOCAL
AREA - ECONOMY |
Cocconato
enjoys a particularly favourable microclimate
in both summer and winter; it is an ideal
spot for a holiday in the country, for
taking in the wonderful views and then
settling down to sample some of the many
specialities on offer in its renowned
restaurants, accompanied by some of the
area’s prized wines. It is famed
for its dairy products: robiola cheese
called “Cocconatino”, tomini
cheese, butter and stracchino.

The
main road, now known as via Roma, has
historic origins and was once called Contrada
Maestra. Old houses with characteristic
balconies line the street, alternating
with churches and aristocratic palazzi.
At the start of the street stands the
seventeenth century chiesa della SS. Trinità,
and a little further on is the eighteenth
century pharmacy, which features historic
furnishings and a frescoed ceiling. The
fifteenth century town hall looks out
over the small but picturesque piazza
Statuto.

| EVENTS |
| The
Palio of Cocconato was started in 1970 as
a contest between the different districts
of the town, recalling the old religious legends
from the Middle Ages. Now it is an event which
involves the entire town. There are eight
districts, each of which organises its own
historic procession. The Palio takes place
on the fourth Sunday in September every year,
during which month there are several other
events. |
