| HISTORY |
This
settlement has ancient origins: it would
appear to have been founded in the Roman
era as a stop for eating: the name Cinaglio
is derived from the Latin “cenaculum”.
It lies at the bottom of the valley, along
the historic road which linked Asti with
the town of Industria. At a later date
it became part of the county of Chiusano;
and in 962 Ottone I granted it to the
Bishop of Asti. In 1383 it became a free
Commune, before passing to the Orléans
dynasty as part of the dowry of Valentina
Visconti.

| LOCAL
AREA |
The
village of Cinaglio, around 13 km from
Asti, lies on a hill in Val Rilate, in
the Basso Monferrato Astigiano area. This
is where you will find the Gorghi naturalistic
district, on the main road to Monale,
a completely wooded area far from any
built-up districts and therefore from
any form of pollution. With a great variety
of tree and flower species, it has many
footpaths.

Giovanni
Lamberti (1869-1956), acclaimed fresco
painter and valued colleague of the Morgaris,
decorated many churches in Liguria and
an impressive 39 churches in the diocese
of Asti alone. His chief work was the
decoration in the church of Masone.
Though a native of Borgosesia, he was
very fond of Cinaglio, and now lies in
the village cemetery.

| EVENTS |
| On
the fourth Sunday in August there is the traditional
village fair, where you can sample the speciality
of Cinaglio: thin crunchy Canestrelli biscuits.
The recipe is very old, mentioned as far back
as 1630, and involves a complicated process:
the ingredients are mixed then the mixture
is rolled into little balls, which are flattened
and cooked in a wood-fired oven in a special
long-handled griddle. |
