HISTORY

The origin of Chiusano d’Asti is a little uncertain. We do know for sure that it was given to the Bishop of Asti by the emperor Ottone I in 962. It was later enfeoffed to the lords of Cossombrato, in the period of infighting between Guelphs and Ghibellines. In 1387 it appears as part of the lands comprising the dowry of Valentina Visconti. Subsequently it was separated from Cossombrato and became independent in 1619. Under Duke Vittorio Amedeo II it was granted to the Caisotti counts.

LOCAL AREA-ECONOMY

Chiusano lies around 13 km from Asti and can be reached by the road from Valle Rilate. It stands out for two ancient churches. The Baroque style parish church dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine, which dates back to the eighteenth century has a simple design with a gabled façade and semi-circular apse. The Chiesa di San Sebastiano was first documented in 1588.

KEY FIGURES

Giovan Battista Codiga, native of the province of Vercelli, was orphaned while very young and grew up in the village of Chiusano d’Asti, before moving to Turin to work for the prince of Carignano in the Savoy court. After a stay in France he was called to serve an ambassador in Spain. After returning to Turin he died, leaving a substantial sum to the parish church of Chiusano.

EVENTS
The Patron Saint’s Day is celebrated in mid July and starts off with the solemn procession of the statue of the Madonna del Carmine through the lit streets of the village. The other original event in Chiusano is the “fera dle masnà” when the children set up a market of toys and various bric a brac, joyfully taking over the entire village (the last Sunday before school closes for the holidays).
