| HISTORY |
The
name of the village derives from the word
“Cellare”, designating a nearby
wood. Like almost all Medieval villages,
Cellarengo had a castle, mentioned in
a diploma dated 1041 marking the donation
of lands from Enrico III to the Bishop
of Asti. However nothing remains of the
castle today. In later centuries the village
was enfeoffed to the noble
Malabaila family (1321) and then to the
Pelletta family (1347). The property then
passed to the Guttuari family of Ferrere
at the beginning of the 15th century and
to the Montiglio family, lords of Villanova,
in 1521.

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
A
farming town in the alto Monferrato area,
this is situated on the western reaches
of the Asti hills which slope down towards
the plains around Turin and the Po river,
around 27 km from Asti.
The coat of arms features an ox, testifying
to the presence of cattle farms in the
area, and ears of wheat symbolising its
most important agricultural crop.

Canonico
Cerruti (19th century) founded the Opera
Pia Michelerio in Asti for the care of
orphans. Matilde di Cellarengo, a nun
from the abbey of S. Anastasio Martire,
was mentioned in a document dating back
to 1182, where the Abbess lsolabella and
the nuns acknowledge their duties to the
canons of the Duomo. Cavalier Luigi Tasca
managed the royal house of the duke of
Genoa and designed the extension to the
parish church.

| EVENTS |
| The
attractive little town of Cellarengo offers
many events. The “summer festival”
is the main happening, held annually on the
last Sunday in July, with barbecues, live
music, dancing and games. The Patron Saint’s
Day dedicated to San Firmino, on the second
Sunday in October, features a procession in
honour of the saint and a play staged in the
A. Pettinati hall. |
