| HISTORY |
An
ancient village, at the foot of a signal
tower. In the third century the castle
was destroyed during the conflict between
the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. The village
then belonged to the estates of the Pietrini
and Ponte families, who rebuilt it. The
history of the village is closely bound
up with happenings at the castle and its
succession of owners. Today the ancient
manor house has been completely restored
and partially extended with additions
built in various successive eras.

| LOCAL
AREA-ECONOMY |
The
village of Castellero is in the north
east of the province of Asti in a hilly
position. The main village lies along
the main road, then there is a scattering
of smaller hamlets. Agriculture plays
a marginal role in the economy of Castellero,
where the population is mainly employed
in local industry and services.

| |
“Tamburello”
is a traditional sport still practised
by the population of Castellero, and in
1989 the village “tamburello”
team won the national championship. The
village has its own sports field, thanks
to the initiative of Don Attilio Novo,
the last parish priest of Castellero.
|
| EVENTS |
| There
are many social occasions for the inhabitants
of Castellero to get together, and to welcome
all those who wish to visit their beautiful
village: the Patron Saint’s Day, at
the end of June; the festival of the Madonna
della Neve in Bricco Trombetta, on the first
Sunday in August; and the hazelnut fair, on
the first and second Sundays in October, with
an interesting convention on the natural and
nutritional characteristics of hazelnuts.
