| HISTORY |
The
first records of Castagnole date back
to the Roman era, but it appears more
frequently in Medieval documents, among
the lands belonging to the counts of Loreto.
The member of the family most connected
to the community was Manfredi I, known
as Lancia, as he spent his youth as a
lance-bearer at the court of Frederick
Redbeard. And the name Castagnole delle
Lanze probably derives from Manfredi I
Lancia.

| ART
AND ARCHITECTURE |
The
historic part of the village is dominated
by the monumental San Pietro parish church,
in Ligurian/Piedmontese Baroque style.
Heading towards the Memorial park we encounter
the panoramic tower, which its builder
used as an astronomical observatory. In
the Museum of Rural Culture there are
dozens of artefacts which have been used
to recreate the interior of a typical
country house.

| EVENTS |
| Castagnole’s
wine traditions culminate in the customary
wine festival held on the first Sunday in
May every year, dedicated to Barbera and the
other wines produced in the area. In the summer
there are numerous country festivals, leading
up to the last week of August, with the celebrations
for San Bartolomeo, now a popular event which
attracts some of Italy’s leading artists. |
