HISTORY

Belveglio was originally known as Malamorte. The first reliable historic records reveal that the first lords of Malamorte were the Turo family (1003-1092). The village changed hands many times. In 1387 it became known as Belvedere, an illustrious name which it kept until it was incorporated into the Department of Marengo by Napoleon Bonaparte. And in this period its name was changed from Belvedere to Belveglio.

LOCAL AREA – ECONOMY

The village is situated in an area of particular environmental interest, between the natural park of Rocchetta Tanaro and the Val Sarmassa nature reserve. The sandy soil in this area is ideal for wine-growing, the Barbera and Grignolino varieties in particular.
The lie of the land, the climate and skilful wine-making practices make a good quality Barbera which can be drunk young or cellared.

ART

At the top of the hill lies the attractive Belveglio castle, which was built around 1100. In the centre of the village stands the imposing, majestic eighteenth century Natività di Maria parish church, which was restored to its present state between 1808 and 1824. Of particular interest inside the church are the Tableaux of the Way of the Cross by contemporary painter and sculptor Sergio Unia.

EVENTS

The key events are: the “Patron Saint’s Day” in the first week of August, and the “Sagra della Bagna Cauda e del Bollito piemontese”, held on the first Saturday in November, a chance to enjoy wonderful local specialities: the incomparable round cardoons and other equally renowned produce, and the excellent ‘bollito Piemontese’ with its inseparable accompaniment of “bagnet” sauce.
