| HISTORY |
The
first historical records of the village
date back to 969: “Mons Baldecherii”
is mentioned in the diploma of Ottone
I to the Bishop of Asti. The castle on
the hill and the original village were
destroyed in 1553 by orders of the French
Marshal Cosse-Brissac, commander in Piedmont.
The castles of Tigliole and Camerino were
also razed to the ground. The village
was taken over by the counts of Asti,
before becoming Savoy property in 1575.
In 1619 it was enfeoffed to the Gabaleone
family of Chieri, who subsequently became
the counts of the area.

| LOCAL
AREA – ECONOMY |
The
area around Baldichieri d’Asti is
mainly hilly and the countryside is a
pleasing alternation of farmed fields,
well-kept vineyards, meadows and woods.
The town offers all services and its vicinity
to the main roads make it an ideal site
for manufacturing, industry, trade and
commerce, which provide over 300 jobs.

| ART |
The
town hall dates back to the end of the
eighteenth century and has been partially
restored. The San Secondo parish church
dates back to 1780, with an attractive
chiaroscuro façade. The square
in front of the church is a terrace which
looks out over the town and surrounding
countryside. In the memorial park, dedicated
to the soldiers who died in the wars,
is the chapel of San Secondo, thought
to date back to 1400.

The
Baldo Carnival is held in the month of
February. On the last Saturday in June
there is a festival to award the Baldo
d’Oro. The village takes part in
the Asti Palio, and holds a festival organised
by the Palio Committee in the last week
of August, and a propitiatory dinner during
the third week of September. On the fourth
Sunday in September is the traditional
patron saint’s day dedicated to
the Madonna del Rosario.
