HISTORY

A rural medieval village which belonged to the Radicati and then Monferrato families. The village is set out in a semi-circle in the shelter of a ridge on two sides of a little valley. There are a number of theories about its origins, one which involves no less than Roman emperor Julius Caesar himself. In actual fact however, it would appear to date even further back: to the Poetici, an ancient tribe which spread throughout the continents, and a certain Aram, tribal chief.

LOCAL AREA – ECONOMY

This is a rural economy, based on arable crops. Though now in decline, this form of agriculture is still very much in evidence. In the past prized species of vegetables were grown here, thanks to the properties of the soil, conveying excellent flavour. In recent years wine-growing has been limited to the sunniest hillside slopes, with high quality wines produced in limited quantities.

KEY FIGURES

Francesco Morelli (1761-1841), count of Aramengo, was a satirical poet. His prolific oeuvre is permeated with nationalism, but he is known above all for his cutting satire regarding the French and Austrians.
Guido Nicola, restorer, founded one of Italy’s best-equipped, highly qualified schools for the restoration of works of art. He has worked for Fine Arts Offices, museums and galleries from all over the world.

"ANDARE A RAMENGO"

This saying, which means “to go bust” is commonly used in Italy, though few know how it originated. Well it does come from the town of Aramengo, which in the past hosted a debtor’s prison. Legend also has it that the name Aramengo itself actually comes from the word “Ramingo”, namely to wander or roam, in exile.
