HISTORY

The village is first mentioned in a number of deeds dating back to 400 AD. Agliano gathered renown in the Middle Ages, thanks to the famed Bianca Lancia. When the wars between Asti and Alessandria ceased, Agliano became the site of battles between the Guelphs and Ghibellines of Asti. More recently this commune became known for its partisans. After 8 September 1943 the Fons Salutis hotel was chosen to host the Governing Council. In 1998 Agliano Terme was awarded a gold medal for partisan valour.

LOCAL AREA – ECONOMY

At the southern-most end of the Monferrato area, Agliano Terme immediately stands out for its stunning setting. It is a point of encounter between two completely different worlds: agriculture, with all the rural traditions still going strong, and tourism, which represents a vital contribution to the town’s economy. Now the hospitality industry revolves around agriculture and the natural spa waters.

PRECIOUS SPRINGS

Agliano Terme is the only town in the Asti Province where you can enjoy the beneficial effects of spa treatments. Inhalations are used to treat all chronic inflammations of the nose, pharynx, larynx and trachea, for both secretory and hypertrophic conditions. In March 1999 the Spa reopened after the winter season with a completely new, well-equipped centre.

EVENTS

The calendar of events in Agliano kicks off in the spring with the traditional gastronomic event “Giornate della Barbera”: two days dedicated to food and wine, turning the spotlight on the local wines. The patron saint’s day is celebrated at the end of July, with dances in the square, sports competitions, fireworks and a small fun fair. There are theatre shows all year round.
